Puff was only a month old kitten when his father left him in a basket with a note in front of Messi's doorstep. Puff's father was not a good cat. He abandoned the tiny meowing Puff soon after his mother died her 9th death. He literally left the newborn in front of a random dog-house and never looked back. Messi was a gentle dog with a heart of gold. When she found Puff, she had to take him in and started taking care of him as her own. Although Messi had a very active social life, she did not have any pups of her own and often felt very lonely; however from that day onwards, Puff became her son and her only family.
Anybody who knew Puff would think he had a very normal childhood. He was extremely popular at school and was really good at playing games; everybody loved him. But despite all these wonderful things, Puff often wondered why he felt like he was different. For one thing, he looked nothing like his mother and he hated chewing on bones she got him and he only did it sometimes so he could fit in with his other doggy-friends who seemed to love the ones their mothers got them! But he knew that deep down, he could not really relate to any of these doggy activities that he had mastered so well. It's true, little Puff had no idea that he wasn't really a dog...
As the years passed, Puff began to feel a greater need to have all his questions answered. With time, he knew for sure that he was not like the other dogs he played with; he realized that he could never be like them. A feeling of deep sadness overwhelmed him and so one day, he decided that he could not keep all this inside him anymore and he must ask his mother about who he really is.
So one sunday night, after dinner, Puff snuggled up to Messi, playfully bit her ears and whispered, "Ma, can I ask you something?" Messi caressed her son with a slight nod of her head and answered "Of course, baby." With a hesitant sigh, Puff gathered all his courage and asked his mother, "Ma, am I really a dog?" Although slightly taken aback, Messi did not show the slightest trace of surprise when Puff asked her this question; deep down, she knew it was coming. She noticed how her son's eyes were swelling up with tears; so she affectionately licked his face and told him, "How much does it matter if you are not one, love? Would you quit being my son?" Puff shyly turned his face away to wipe away his tears and answered, "I guess not."
"You will always be my son no matter what", answered Messi, "You are and will always be very very loved, my child."
Messi had suddenly realized how important it was for her to tell her son what had really happened and that night, she held him close and began to tell him the whole story...
